Father of UML visits Australia
01.05.09
Dr. Ivar Jacobson, one of the legendary Three Amigos (not the Telstra variety but one of the creators of the Unified Modelling Language) was in Melbourne recently to talk about working smarter and what they don’t teach you about software at school.
His message was very straight-forward. We want what we’ve always wanted – good quality software, quickly and at low cost. However the software industry is still driven by fashion, fads and the promise of a “silver bullet” from the latest technology or methodology. These may or may not be useful but the real problem is how people work. How often do we do things because that’s how it’s always been done? And we’re still ending up with over cost, over time projects.
In Ivar’s words – this is not smart!! To be smarter, we need to change the way we work in the following areas - People - Teams - Projects - Requirements - Architecture - Modelling - Test - Documentation - Process - Knowledge - Outsourcing – Tools.
The talk was organised by the Australian Computer Society, you can download the full presentation from their website here.
